The Excise Department is studying the Taxation on greenhouse gas emissions “Carbon tax”



The Excise Department is studying the taxation of greenhouse gas emissions “carbon tax” in the country, which effective in 2023. Thailand will start to collect the tax from the products with high amount of carbon emissions, such as cement, iron, aluminum, chemical fertilizers, and power generation.


Currently, there are two methods to collecting carbon taxes around the world:

1. Taxation on products with carbon emissions, higher tax for higher carbon emission

2. Taxation on the production process of the factory, which will be calculated from plant's carbon emissions.



Excise Department prepares to quantify carbon emissions from production processes in cooperation with TGO.
