BMA Inspect the Improvements at Saimai Solid Waste Transfer Station to Resolve Odor Pollution Issues

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the renovation of waste disposal facility into a 100% closed system. The upgrades include the installation of "E-NOSE" electronic odor sensors and air curtains to prevent leakage, aiming to resolve odor issues at the Saimai Solid Waste Disposal Center. Strict controls on garbage trucks have also been implemented to return clean air to the community.

On March 25, 2026, the Deputy Governor of Bangkok conducted a site visit to monitor the progress of 2 improvement projects, i.e., (1) the new solid waste transfer station project at the Saimai Solid Waste Disposal Center, ensuring proper disposal and (2) the private-sector contracted project for transporting waste from the Saimai Solid Waste Disposal Center for sanitary landfilling. This visit was a follow-up to the monitoring conducted in January 2026. During the visit, the Deputy Governor instructed the contracting companies to clear all waste piles located outside the buildings and emphasized measures to control and prevent waste odors from affecting residents in nearby areas.

The new solid waste transfer station project at the Saimai Center covers an area of 20 rai. Under this project, a private entity invested in the construction and operation of the waste disposal system on private land for a 20-year period, starting from May 9, 2022, to May 8, 2042. The contractor will collect 1,000 tons of waste per day, transport it to the Saimai transfer station, compress it into containers, and transport it for disposal in Huai Krachao District, Kanchanaburi Province. Currently, the contractor has completed the construction of additional waste loading buildings.

Regarding the four-year private-sector contract for transporting waste from the Saimai transfer station for sanitary landfilling, which runs from September 4, 2025, to September 3, 2029, the contractor manages 1,000 tons of waste per day. The waste is compressed into containers at the Saimai station before being transported to private landfill sites. Currently, the contractor for this project has completed several facility improvements at the transfer station, including Renovating the waste transfer buildings into a 100% closed system, Constructing building extensions to fully cover the waste transfer areas, Repairing concrete floors in two of the transfer bays, Upgrading the drainage, electrical, plumbing, and air treatment systems for maximum efficiency, Repairing damaged road surfaces within the transfer station, Certifying all weighbridge scales and installing a computer system for waste data collection and centralized data transmission, Installing the AI E-Nose (Intelligent Odor Monitoring System), Implementing a traffic management plan within the station for waste receiving, as well as Constructing a permanent wheel-washing station for garbage trucks to replace the temporary facility.
