"Smart Grid Mae Hong Son" supports green electricity, enhance the stability of the electrical system

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), EGAT and PEA are in cooperation for “Smart Grid Development Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province”, in line with Thailand's short-term smart grid development plan 2017 – 2021, in which parties involved in will upgrade the original grid system to a smart grid system by using modern technology and clean energy to produce electricity.

EGAT has applied Smart Grid technology to manage and connect the electricity generating system from renewable energy and power plants scattered in Mae Hong Son Province to work together. The Smart Grid Control Center System developed by EGAT will balance between demand & supply by forcasting and ordering all power generation sources in Mae Hong Son, in which PEA connect PEA’s main power transmission system, which supply power to Mueang Mae Hong Son District, during normal times, while make it independent when the main power system fails. EGAT has also installed solar panels or solar farms with production capacity of 3 megawatts in Tambon Pha Bong & Mueang Mae Hong Son District and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), as backup power to be able to supply electricity immediately when power outage occur. The operation will be completed by the end of 2022.

There is a plan to expand the Solar Rooftop to reduce the power generation of the main system by installing Solar Rooftop with total capacity of 200 kilowatts for government agencies in Mae Hong Son Province. System installation will help reducing expenses for agencies as well as reducing the burden on the transmission system and generating power in the system.
