Minister of Industry studies Japanese business models to push Thailand towards circular economy & green industries

Ms. Pimphattra Wichaikul, Minister of Industry, has visited, an automobile recycling plant, Eco-R Japan, in Tochigi Prefecture, Kanto Region, Japan. The purpose of the visit was to study and support the implementation of ELV (End of Life Vehicle) measures. These measures focus on reducing vehicle waste, proper processing of ELV, and maximizing the reuse of components and materials. This will help reduce environmental impact, improve resource efficiency, and create new business opportunities related to recycling and reuse.

Eco-R Japan is dedicated to maximizing the utilization of resources from old vehicles and developing environmentally related industries. Their goal is to drive the organization and society towards sustainability.

In addition, a discussion was held with the headquarters of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on cooperation in the circular economy and green industry, which are key to developing Thailand towards sustainability.

Ms. Pimphattra stated that Thailand is committed to promoting the Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG Economy Model) by emphasizing efficient resource use, maximum recycling, and sustainable environmental impact reduction. The BCG policy aligns with the country's goal of promoting ELV measures, which can be achieved through cooperation from all sectors. Thailand has declared its intention to address global warming by aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero by 2065.

The Ministry of Industry has therefore set policies and measures to promote the use of renewable and clean energy, create green industries, and enhance the competitiveness of Thai entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the Thai government has measures to promote investment in target industries such as the semiconductor industry, which is currently very important and is a base for the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

"The Ministry of Industry will support the private sector in conducting sustainable businesses and will drive forward the implementation of various measures to create tangible results for a sustainable future for Thailand."

Mrs. Nipa Rukamatu. Deputy Governor (Corporate Strategy), the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), said that the government is committed to sustainable development, assigning the IEAT and the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) to jointly develop a Circular Industrial Estate in the area of 5,000 rai (8 square meters) in Chonburi Province.

This project aims to support target industries (S-Curve), especially the electric vehicle (EV) industry, which is crucial for attracting investors and promoting the efficient management of battery waste through recycling and reuse. The development of the Circular Industrial Estate aligns with the concept of sustainable and environmentally friendly development, focusing on efficient resource use and waste reduction, which is in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"The project is currently underway, with a memorandum of understanding signed between the IEAT and the EECO, and a working group has been appointed to drive the project and study the feasibility and suitability of establishing the industrial estate. It is expected that the Circular Industrial Estate will be a key mechanism in driving Thailand's circular economy, creating new business opportunities, and reducing environmental impact in a sustainable manner. The Working Group for the Development of the Circular Industrial Estate has scheduled its first meeting on August 19, 2024, to accelerate the joint efforts on circular economy."
