The Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Plastics and Waste Management (PPP Plastics) hosted the “PPP Plastics Network Meeting: Driving Circularity Ecosystem.” The event aimed to share progress and outline the strategic direction for Thailand’s plastic circular economy, with member organizations from various sectors in attendance.
PPP Plastics was established in 2018 under the leadership of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD), along with over 30 partner organizations from the public, private, and civil society sectors. The primary goal is to reduce plastic waste in Thai seas by at least 50% by 2027. [1]
PPP Plastics has played a crucial role in creating beneficial changes for industry and the economy. During a period of calls to cease or reduce plastic production while government policies were not yet supportive and the Circular Economy concept was not widely known, this partnership provided the government with access to vital data. This led to the formulation of plastic management policies that benefit the environment, the entire industrial system, and the national economy. The network’s collaboration has also secured funding and resources for Thailand’s circular ecosystem from global organizations, such as the World Bank, GIZ (German International Cooperation), and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW), as well as investments from Thai agencies and member organizations. These efforts have significantly advanced the infrastructure for sustainable plastic management.
A flagship project is the ‘Smart Recycling Hub’, an integrated recycling center aiming to recycle at least 50,000 tons of high-quality plastic used back into the production system annually. Additionally, a feasibility study is underway for the establishment of Clean Material Recovery Facilities (Clean MRF) in Bangkok and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to enhance the country’s recycling system.
