The Thai government, through the Ministry of Energy, is preparing to appoint a committee to draft a new Power Development Plan (PDP) to upgrade the country’s energy management in line with economic growth, technological advances, and future electricity demand.
In June, several key recommendations were raised for the new PDP, including the appropriate share of renewable energy, readiness of the power grid, projected economic and electricity demand growth, as well as the urgency of integrating new energy technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) into the system.
The new PDP will prioritize clean energy, electricity generation by communities, and the use of agricultural waste for power production. It also aims to promote small-scale community power plants to reduce energy costs, create local income, and reflect the voices of the people in terms of clean energy access, fair pricing, and opportunities for community participation in power generation.
The Ministry of Energy expects the new PDP to be completed by the end of 2025, marking an important step toward a secure and sustainable Thai energy system.
