Biomass Cogeneration Power Plant from Rice Husks

As part of efforts to promote resource efficiency, Ajinomoto Group have developed processes to utilize of by-products and materials from production process. Currently, the company has invested in “biomass steam boiler” at Ayutthaya factory, this is the second factory of the company after the Kamphaeng Phet factory using this technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The company lunched the 1st biomass cogeneration power plant at Kamphaeng Phet Factory in 2022, using rice husks as biofuel to produce steam energy to replace the use of fuel oil. [1]

The Ayutthaya Factory has also adopted biomass steam boiler technology to reduce the use of fuel oil as well. It is expected that both factories will reduce fuel oil consumption by over 60 million liters and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 170,000 tons per year. The rice husk ash, a by-product of the biomass cogeneration power plant, can be used to produce soil conditioners. [2]

In addition, the company has implemented other projects to manage raw materials and byproduct within the plants, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and move towards to low-carbon business organization such as:

(1) Using water from the fermentation process, to produce liquid fertilizer that will provide necessary nutrients for plants and grow plankton for shrimp and fish farming.

(2) Launching the "Too Good To Waste" project to reduce food waste by promoting simple ideas for home cooking by using all available ingredients.

(3) Promoting EV trucks for Green Logistics to distribute products, with pilot projects at Ayutthaya factory, Pathum Thani factory, and Nong Khae-Saraburi factory [3]
